Schneiderman: Huntley, cronies ran sham nonprofit

Shirley Huntley, State SenatorThe following report was written by Casey Seiler of the Times Union:

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said that the indictment of state Sen. Shirley Huntley for her alleged role in an attempt to cover up the theft of almost $30,000 in public funds through a ?sham nonprofit? emerged from his office?s year-old collaboration with state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, Schneiderman displayed a reproduction of a ?template? letter allegedly drawn up by Huntley and others to make it seem as if the nonprofit Parent Workshop Inc., which received $30,000 in member item funds requested by the Queens Democrat, had provided programming to the Southern Queens Park Association when no such services had been provided.

Huntley created Parent Workshop in March 2006, and secured the member item in May 2008.

Senate Democratic Leader John Sampson issued the following statement: ?With the filings of today?s charges, I have removed Senator Huntley from her committee ranking and leadership positions, effective immediately.?

Huntley has, however, already received this year?s $9,000 stipend as the ranking Democrat on the chamber?s Mental Health Committee. (A quarter of these lulus are paid in March; the remainder goes out after the budget is passed ? which this year was also in March.)

Schneiderman said the investigation was ongoing, and suggested similar actions were in the pipeline as a result of his unique arrangement with DiNapoli on public integrity cases. ?There is more firepower being brought to bear on this issue than there has been,? he said, pointing to federal as state prosecutors and watchdog entities.

Huntley, who on Saturday declared her innocence, appeared Monday morning at Nassau County courthouse under a superceding indictment that added to last year?s action against four people, including a Huntley staffer and the senator?s niece. Today?s 20-count indictment charges the senator with conspiracy, a misdemeanor, and two felonies: tampering with physical evidence and falsifying business records.

A felony conviction would result in Huntley?s automatic ejection from the Legislature.

Re-named in the new indictment was Huntley?s niece Lynn Smith, who served as the non-profit?s treasurer; its president Patricia Savage, a Huntley aide; and David Gantt, a New York City Housing Authority official who the indictment says served as a ?consultant? for Parent Workshop.

Conspicuous in his absence from the new superceding indictment is Roger Scotland, who the December press release from the AG?s office identifies thusly:

Defendent Roger N. Scotland, the President of the Southern Queens Park Association, a separate nonprofit corporation located in Queens, also created a false record in an attempt to hide the theft from investigators. Mr. Scotland is charged with Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and conspiracy to engage in those crimes.

The new indictment makes no mention of Scotland, though its description of the creation of the letter from the Southern Queens Park Association refers to an unnamed ?witness known to the Grand Jury? who created the bogus missive allegedly at the request of Huntley and Savage.

The AG?s office said the case against Scotland is ?still pending.?

Should I Buy Gold? Ask Robert Bhat - Credit Card and Finance Tips

As a finance professional, Robert Bhat frequently gets asked the question, Should I buy gold?? Because Robert Bhat primarily deals with commercial real estate and investments for big industries, he?s quick to tell inquisitors that he?s not the most qualified person to speak on personal investments.? However, because Robert Bhat is so frequently confronted with the question, he wants to take a moment to address the great precious metal issue.

Who Are You?

Robert Bhat will always respond to this question with one of his own: Who are you?? The question digs at something more than simple identity!? For Robert Bhat, no one should ever buy anything as a blanket rule.? Whether or not you buy gold (or any other precious metal) should be determined not by gold, but by your own financial situation and portfolio.

If you?re looking to diversify your portfolio, and you have liquid cash with which you can do so, then Robert Bhat believes that smart precious metal investments can turn out to be quite profitable in the long run.? However, if you only have $800 to ?play with,? Robert Bhat doesn?t consider gold and other precious metals to be essential investments for those who have a more limited net worth.

How Long Will You Hold?

Gold and other precious metals, advises Robert Bhat, are not for short term investors.? While the price of gold may have risen quickly in recent years, that doesn?t guarantee it will continue to do so in the next few months.? Robert Bhat always counters gold-proponents who cite its recent soar in price by reminding them that past performance never guarantees future performance.

Of course, more authoritative articles can help you continue to work through this decision.? But, Robert Bhat is happy to offer what advice he does have on precious metals as investments.

Former Ivory Coast president Gbagbo's party HQ attacked

Former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo's party headquarters was attacked Saturday by armed men who abducted two people and left three slightly wounded, witnesses said.

The incident heightened tensions in the country's economic capital of Abidjan after a recent series of attacks against the army in the area as well as along the border with Liberia.

An AFP photographer at the offices of the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) in the upscale Cocody district saw a car in flames outside while inside a door was smashed, computer equipment stolen and documents strewn over the floor.

"There were about 10 of us having a meeting when people we did not know burst in, carrying clubs, machetes and shotguns," said Jean-Luc Ouallo, a member of the FPI's youth wing.

"They took away two of our comrades" in a raid which lasted some 10 minutes, he said.

"They threatened to shoot us or burn us alive," added Claude Desire Dasse, another youth wing leader.

Another FPI member said the assailants told them, "get out, get out or we'll burn everything."

The witnesses said the men were speaking Dioula, a language originating from the country's north but widely spoken.

The young party members locked themselves in the toilets, which the men were unable to open, Dasse said, though windows were broken.

Three men were hurt, two in the building and a third just outside as he was talking to guards on duty.

One was hit on the head and two in the face.

Police and troops of the UN peacekeeping mission force in Ivory Coast, known as ONUCI, went to the scene after the attack.

It was the latest incident in a series which have affected Abidjan more than a year after the post-electoral crisis of December 2010 to April 2011 claimed 3,000 lives.

The crisis was sparked after Gbagbo refused to step down despite having lost presidential elections to his rival Alassane Ouattara.

On Thursday, armed men attacked an army base, a prison and police stations near Abidjan, prompting Prime Minister Jeannot Kouadio Ahoussou to call on those responsible to disarm and not block the country's "revival."

Ahoussou called for dialogue and announced the dispatch of teams to listen to the population's grievances across the country.

ONUCI, which also issued an urgent appeal for calm, said Friday that the violence demonstrated the need to continue the demobilisation, disarmament and integration of the militia and other fighters responsible for the post-election violence.

The UN mission said at least 70 people had been arrested in the past few days by government security forces on suspicion of attempting attacks on the state.

Gbagbo was eventually arrested after forces loyal to Ouattara stormed his heavily fortified home with French and UN military backing.

He was extradited in November last year to face trial by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity.

Romney wants running mate to play it safe, for now

GLEN ALLEN, Va. (AP) ? Mitt Romney wants running mate Paul Ryan to play it safe.

Ryan, the nation's most controversial budget architect, is often described as the intellectual leader of the House Republican caucus. But Romney's presidential campaign headquarters in Boston seems, for now, to prefer that the 42-year-old father of three talks about camping and milking cows instead of the fiscal proposals that made him a conservative hero.

Ryan, who wrote a plan to overhaul Medicare as chairman of the House Budget Committee, did not use the word "Medicare" with voters over the first four days as the vice presidential candidate. When he finally touched on the health care insurance program for seniors, he did so only in broad strokes after Romney himself first outlined the campaign's talking points.

"We will not duck the tough issues," Ryan said Friday in Virginia. "We will lead."

But Ryan has been directed to avoid taking questions from reporters who travel with him, and to agree only to a few carefully selected interviews. He is known for sketching budget graphs on napkins to explain his ideas, but this past week it was Romney who used a white board during a news conference to help detail his own plan ? one he says is virtually identical to Ryan's.

"I'm joining the Romney ticket," Ryan told an Ohio television station this week. "It's not the other way around. So I'm supporting the Mitt Romney plan."

Some of the Republican Party's most passionate voters see it a different way. Reluctant to support Romney during the GOP primary, they favor Ryan and his ideas more than the former Massachusetts governor who will head the party's ticket.

Romney hopes that Ryan's conservative credentials and his boyish enthusiasm will help him solidify support from the base of his party and close the "likability gap" with President Barack Obama, who remains relatively popular in spite of the nation's struggling economy.

Yet Romney does not want Ryan's plans to overshadow his own candidacy. Advisers suggest that Ryan's role will change over time. He is eager to do more, and a week after his selection became official, there are already signs that he's beginning to play a more active role.

The congressman visited a retirement village in Florida on Saturday and emphasized that the plans he has pushed in Congress are designed to save Medicare, not end it. Introducing his mother, a Medicare recipient, to the crowd, the candidate spoke about what the program has meant to his family and said that "we have to keep that guarantee."

But in taking up the issue, he did not lay out the complexities of his proposals to let future retirees choose alternatives to traditional Medicare.

Romney's campaign managers want him to proceed with caution.

Romney's team remembers well the problems caused by running mates who may have been trusted prematurely to play a prominent role in a presidential race ? Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in 2008 and Sen. Dan Quayle in 1988, among them.

The Republican presidential campaign has gone to great lengths to remind voters that Romney's way rules.

Before Ryan first addressed Medicare in Ohio this week, large signs were placed in front of and behind the podium reading, "The Romney Plan." After spending his first two days campaigning with Romney, Ryan will be at his side again in the week ahead for at least one campaign appearance.

The candidates, labeled as "America's Comeback Team" in Romney's campaign signs, are set to appear together in New Hampshire's largest city on Monday. It is expected to be first of what may be many joint appearances in the coming days.

When they are together, the gregarious Ryan helps Romney shed his sometimes wooden ways, and they seem to draw larger crowds together than Romney does on his own.

Just don't expect Ryan to start charting his Medicare plans on stage. His proposal to turn the guaranteed health care program for people 65 and over into a voucher-like system creates significant political challenges for the Romney-Ryan ticket ? and for Republicans across the country. Many seniors don't fully understand the proposal, and Obama's re-election campaign is aggressively condemning the plan as something that would "end Medicare as we know it."

That's largely why Romney is easing Ryan into the debate. While Ryan explained his complicated plans at length during dozens of Medicare town hall-style meetings before becoming Romney's running mate, those kinds of meetings probably are over because they're considered too politically dangerous to continue.

Instead, Ryan is being encouraged to discuss his young children, his working-class background and his love of the outdoors as the American people get to know him.

"Let's play stump the running mate later. Right now I want to enjoy the fair," Ryan said when asked about Medicare at the Iowa State Fair.

"We do cow-milking contests in Wisconsin," he continued. "I usually lose to a 17-year-old woman who grew up on a dairy farm, who's wearing like a sash and tiara."

Despite the cautious approach, Romney's advisers are expecting Ryan to stumble at times early on as his record faces unprecedented scrutiny. Already, some concerns have popped up.

He reversed course on Thursday and acknowledged lobbying the government for stimulus money after twice denying he had done so. The admission came only after the release of letters, with his signature, asking for millions of the program's dollars on behalf of two companies in his home state.

And while he has tried to avoid diving into the specifics of his Medicare plan, a reporter pushed him to explain an apparent contradiction during an impromptu lunch meeting in Ohio.

In the interview, Ryan said he never would have included a $700 billion Medicare cut in his budget if Obama hadn't done it first.

"He put those cuts there," Ryan said of the president. "We would never have done it in the first place."

The defense represented a deviation from the Romney campaign's talking points and overshadowed what was supposed to be a made-for-TV stop at local hotdog restaurant.

XO Communications First Service Provider to Deploy 100G ...

HERNDON, VA ? (Marketwire) ? 08/14/12 ? XO Communications has made a major transformation in its nationwide optical network, enabling the company to deliver the next wave of high-speed optical networking services and meet the explosive bandwidth demands driven by cloud services, Internet videos, mobile services and new wireless technologies.

The company today announced that it is the first service provider in the United States to deploy 100 Gbps (Gigabit per second) optical technology across a long haul fiber network on a nationwide basis. The Nokia Siemens Networks optical system deployed in the XO long haul network is capable of simultaneously transmitting up to 96 wavelengths of light, each carrying data at 100G and allowing a total data transfer speed of up to 9.6 Terabits per second. Today?s announcement represents XO Communications? evolution to next generation optical transport network technology to deliver core network speeds of 100G and the ability to scale to 400G and beyond.

?While other telecommunications companies have deployed or tested 100G optical systems across portions of their networks, XO Communications is the first service provider to deploy 100G technology on an operational basis coast-to-coast across its nationwide fiber network,? said Randy Nicklas, senior vice president and chief technology officer for XO Communications. ?By making this leap to 100G, XO Communications is taking a leadership role in utilization of optical networking and offering customers the network infrastructure and services needed in order to deliver today?s cloud computing, mobile wireless and Internet video delivery platforms and services.?

The 100G optical network platform will enable XO Communications to more efficiently manage the increasing data traffic across its network from enterprise and wholesale customers? Internet, video, mobile data and cloud-based enterprise applications. By increasing the bandwidth efficiency of its long haul fiber infrastructure with state of the art optical equipment, XO Communications can carry more than10 times the amount of network traffic carried on a standard route using previous generation optical systems. In addition, the 100G technology platform will enable XO Communications to offer 100 Gbps optical network services to customers that increasingly need higher bandwidth solutions, including cable companies, mobile wireless service providers, and domestic and international telecommunications companies.

?We are happy to play a key role in enabling XO Communications to reach this important industry milestone,? said Jim Benson, head of Optical Networks for the Americas at Nokia Siemens Networks. ?With the use of our high performance 100G coherent technology, XO Communications has built an automated, high capacity, state of the art network that will allow it to provide end customers with very low latency service connections coast-to-coast.?

XO Communications has deployed Nokia Siemens Networks? Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) network based on the hiT7300 platform across its coast-to-coast routes on its long haul optical network. The hiT7300 is a proven, high-capacity, flexible and cost-efficient packet-optical transport platform and is part of Nokia Siemens Networks? Liquid Transport architecture. The platform utilizes the installed network infrastructure by implementing coherent transmission technology, thereby protecting operator investments. By offering DCM-free transmission, this solution enables lower latency (less delay) in data transmission and allows a rapid, cost effective transition to 100 Gbps line speeds. A future-proof hardware design in the Nokia Siemens Networks solution supports up to 400G and colorless, directionless ROADM functionality.

?For years, Heavy Reading has positioned 100G as the next-generation transport rate for backbone networks, as continued traffic growth has simply outgrown the capacity of 10G and even 40G,? said Sterling Perrin, senior analyst at Heavy Reading. ?XO?s announcement today of the first nationwide 100G network across the U.S. is another major milestone in the continued commercial progress of 100G. We believe that broad operator adoption of 100G will benefit businesses, consumers, and mobile data users alike.?

CHART OF THE DAY: HTC Stock - Business Insider

HTC was the first phone maker to find success using Android. It launched the first Android phone, the G1. Then it built the Nexus One, which was the first "Google Phone," meaning Google still had control over most aspects of the phone. In October of 2011, HTC was the most popular smartphone maker in the U.S., according to Canalys.

And while that sounds good, it might have been the last highlight of HTC's run with Android. It's since been displaced by Samsung as the biggest Android smartphone company. Google has worked with Samsung on "Nexus" phones and tablets. And Google bought Motorola to build its own Android smartphones.

This leaves HTC out on its own. As you can see in this chart, HTC's stock had a nice run with Android, but it's lost all its Android gains. It's back to square one. Maybe the rumored Facebook phone can revive HTC.

Adoring The Daylight: How Light Affects Your Life | Indoor Lighting ...

Now the sun?s out, we are all far more aware of how bright everything is. The sunshine bounces off the ultra green leaves on the trees, and the whole world looks like a shinier, happier place!

My front room is dominated by a pair of French doors that let light flood in from ceiling to floor, and it really transforms the feeling of the whole room ? and my mood!

We all take it for granted in a way, but daylight, and light in general, have many, many health benefits for everyone. There are lots of new fangled light therapies out there these days, and we shall take a look at those later, but first of all we will look at the health benefits of daylight.

The days of worshipping artificial light

Between 1950 and 1965, it was a different story. New architectural methods and the boom in artificial lighting techniques meant that a lot of schools, hospitals and other governmental buildings were made with fewer windows, as these new methods were deemed to perform better than daylight itself!

In a 1990 report, though, workers in Berlin believed that work spaces with artificial lighting were a health hazard, and that vision related problems, such as eye fatigue, were far greater in those places with no daylight present. It also had a bearing on temperature and noise levels too, which had a negative effect on the working environment.

With a return of open plan working and large glass frontages, there is a turn back to using natural daylight now, and it is proven to have a positive effect on work performance and of course health benefits, not to mention the green energy efficiency, too!

Well, no-one leaves their lights on all day now, do they?!

Are you feeling SAD?

Of course, there are cases when a lack of sunlight or daylight can cause far more serious health problems. The mood disorder Seasonal Affective Disorder, where people experience depressive symptoms due to lack of light, is a horrible condition.

Thousands of people are affected every year, particularly in the winter months, but it can also affect people in the summer in countries such as the UK who still don?t get enough sunshine even in July and August.

Of course, the answer to this debilitating condition is more light, and so the invention of light box therapy was welcomed with open arms.

The light box emits more lumens that a normal light bulb. It consists of a bright white, full spectrum light at 10,000 lux, a blue light of 2,500 lux, and a green light of 350 lux. Just sitting in front of the box (eyes closed) for 30 to 60 minutes can produce melatonin suppression in sufferers, and can help people beat their depressive symptoms.

Illumatherapy ? Light up my Life!

A few weeks ago I stayed at a boutique hotel, and the bath was rigged up like a disco! Once you had run the bath and closed the doors, brightly coloured lights shone out through LED?s in the side of the bath, illuminating the water into different shades of yellow, blue, green and purple. It was my most memorable bath ever!

Checking it out afterwards, seems that I had just experienced illumatherapy, where different coloured lighting is assembled in a bath tub to enhance and alter the mood.

The colour wheel used in this process states that green is the colour for balance and harmony; yellow indicates humour, intellect and creativity; purple supports imagination and meditation; blue aims to promote truth and calmness, and red is for physical energy and vitality.

Apparently, different coloured lights have different wave lengths, so also have an effect on the moods and energy of a person ? and that person can also absorb the coloured light, affecting hormone levels.

Well I never! I?ve got to say, I went to bed early that night in the hotel, so I must have been going through the blue and purple spectrum!

How does light affect your mood? And do you use different coloured bulbs at home to create a different mood?
