Vandals strike again at Holy Trinity Church, Barnoldswick

A Barnoldswick church has been hit by another spate of vandalism just as its new vicar was about to begin her role.

Vandals caused damage estimated at nearly ?400 at Holy Trinity Church, on Gisburn Road, last Wednesday evening.

Churchwarden Mark Williams said a resident witnessed around a half dozen youths breaking window panes, removing flagstones from a wall and then breaking them as well.

?They?ve broken some windows again and around a half dozen youngsters picked up these stones, waved them about above their heads and then threw them down the cellar steps, smashing them and breaking the masonry at the bottom.

?They should try to show more respect to a church that serves the community,? he said. ?It?s not very good for people attending a wedding or christening to have to come to a damaged building.?

Mr Williams also said the vandalism came as church officials were preparing for the collation service of new vicar the Rev Diane Weaver, which took place last night.

?It?s not a very good welcome for her,? said Mr Williams. It is the second time the church has been vandalised in the past few months.

In November, offenders damaged six panes in a window next to the altar, causing damage estimated at ?200.
