Auto-tonomous Cars Now Legal in Nevada
It seems a bit like alternate-universe thinking to those of us who love to drive cars, but Google has been a leader in developing vehicles that will drive themselves. Their stated aim is, ??to help prevent traffic accidents, free-up people?s time and reduce carbon emissions by fundamentally changing car use.?
Fair enough, considering many drivers don?t share our love of being in close contact with their automobiles. Google has assembled a learned team to develop their autonomous autos and have logged more than 150,000 test miles with tests cars guided by radar sensors, video cameras, laser range finders and ? you guessed it ? Google maps. One of their team even modified a Prius to deliver pizza by itself. Hot deep dish and no tip.
Now the state of Nevada has passed legislation that makes it legal to use autonomous automobiles on its roads. This assures Google and automakers also testing robocars a true, real world testing ground. The rules do stipulate that for the time being there has to be a specially-licensed driver with the car, a $1-3 million bond is required and each car must be fitted with a black-box recorder.
While the regulations allow the operator to use a cell phone and also text, the no drinking-and-driving laws still apply.
Whether or not you are looking forward to the day of no-driver driving, the technology is slick and worth knowing about. And guess how you can find it? Just Google ?YouTube autonomous cars.?
