Police-training - The National Autistic Society

The NAS welcomes a recent?Independent Commission on Mental Health and Policing report which recommends that police training should be amended to include sufficient information on communicating with people with mental health issues or learning disabilities, including autism.

The Commission was tasked by the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan Howe to look into how the police deal with incidents involving people with mental health problems. The Commission looked at 55 cases where people had died or sustained a serious injury during or following contact with the police, including the case of ZH,? a young boy who was restrained by police after jumping into a swimming pool.

The Adult Autism Strategy for England sets out that staff in the criminal justice system should have access to training on autism, however little progress has been made on implementing this across the country. The NAS recently launched a campaign called?Push for Action to help ensure that the strategy is delivered. We are pushing for better training for criminal justice professionals, and the Commission?s report further demonstrates why this is needed.
