Rand Paul's Filibuster Got Him Almost 3,500 Twitter Followers an Hour
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky) had approximately 96,000 Twitter followers when he began his filibuster just before noon Wednesday. When he finally finished speaking almost 13 hours later, his follower count was sitting pretty at slightly more than 141,000 ? a total gain of approximately 40,000 followers, or a bit less than 3,500 an hour.

Paul announced his filibuster on Twitter, then his staff got to work highlighting tweetable quotes from his speech. That, combined with other lawmakers and citizens' support for Paul's filibuster and related hashtags, helped drive the event into the national spotlight.
Paul decided to engage in a rare talking filibuster against John Brennan's nomination as CIA director after Attorney General Eric Holder told him in a letter that the government could in "extreme circumstances" order drone strikes against American citizens on American soil.
