Judy Browne is the creator and founder of Workshop for Women, LLC, where she offers fun, hand-on classes in basic home improvement skills for women. She is also a certified home inspector with Pillar to Post.
Judy worked for 20 years as a manufacturing engineer and project manager for a large manufacturing company in Littleton. When the company began to send their operations overseas, Judy seized the opportunity to fulfill a long time dream: becoming a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. During that year, she trained hundreds of unskilled volunteers in the construction skills necessary to build a
home.
The idea for Workshop for Women began to grow while she spent 14 weeks of her volunteer year working on a Women Build home. ?What impressed me most were the women who came to the site knowing little or nothing about construction and who left with renewed confidence and faith in their ability to accomplish anything they wanted,? Judy says. ?I wanted more women to experience that.?
So when her volunteer year ended, reluctant to rejoin corporate America, Judy decided to use her engineering background and her experience with Habitat for Humanity to create hands-on workshops to teach women home maintenance and repair skills. ?We offer women an opportunity to learn skills to develop self sufficiency, to become empowered through learning and to gain a renewed sense of confidence in their abilities,? Judy says. ?And we offer a safe,
comfortable and supportive environment in which to learn.?
In 2007, spurred on by the experience and feedback of her? students, Judy decided to begin the process to become a Certified Home Inspector. She spent nearly a year working with other home inspectors looking for someone willing to train and mentor her. In August of 2008 Judy started working with Scott Lunsford of Pillar to Post Home Inspections and received her certification with Pillar to Post in December of 2008. Since then Judy has performed more than 200 home inspections and prides herself on using the home inspection process as a way to educate homeowners about what is important in their homes.
