Yes, really. I know how it sounds, but really, you should talk to a few of these people. There's one difference, I guess, unlike native Americans and imported African slaves, most native peoples who lived in Northern Africa are extinct because of the contest and the constant toll of slavery, and have no descendants.</p><p>And of course, when it comes to America's slaves<nobr><wbr/></nobr>... To begin this type of pushup, place your hands and feet flat onto the ground bending you back to do so. Push your torso lower and more forward as you bend your elbows. The rapid movements of your muscle fibers create heat from friction and cause your body to dehydrate quickly. Start with free weights like dumbbells and barbells, then move on to machines. Smaller muscles that can be worked with dumbbells tend to fatigue sooner than large muscle groups. Back then, I had taken on Basic programming as a high school student. In those days, the PC of choice was the Radio Shack TRS-80 ? this was just a couple of years before the introduction of the first Apple computer.</p> <p>In those dark days before the Internet and before Microsoft, the only software choices we had were retail programs that could cost hundreds of dollars, or cheap video games that were offered as Shareware.</p> <p>Believe it or not, in those days, we computer nerds would pass around software on floppy disk. These days, there simply are not too many programs that can be loaded onto a single diskette.</p> <p>I mention this now as I contemplate the various ways in which software is now distributed. We consumers are always playing a cat-and-mouse game with software developers.</p> <p>In the early 80?s, the companies who had deep pockets were the ones selling their software at retail. The ones who were struggling to find traction in the marketplace were the ones offering their software as Shareware.</p> <p>If you doubt this conclusion, then let me ask you a question. Which Microsoft products are available to the public as Shareware packages?</p> <p>You just proved my point.</p> <p>Being an individual who has played both sides of the software fence as both a consumer and developer, I am in a position to tell this story so that you as the consumer can really appreciate the quandary of the developer.</p> <p>Nag screens are the storefront of the shareware developers. See, the challenge is that it really does cost money to develop software. Yet, the public is still of the mindset that they want all of their software for free.</p> <p>Understanding the free mindset of the consumer, software developers have tried various schemes to get paid for their time and efforts. These days, you will find Shareware, Trialware, Adware and Retail.</p> <p>See, the retail boys have the best advantage. They can afford to dump millions into advertising to build the interest in their products. Funnier still, the consumer does not expect to get retail products for free. For some reason, it is okay to pay the big boys retail for their products, but the little guy is supposed to give away his work for free!</p> <p>So, why is it that we consumers treat the small companies differently? We will pay $100 to $175 for Microsoft Office XP, but we would not pay for Sun Office! Sun Microsystems Office product is considered by many to be a much better product than Microsoft?s, but Sun had to resort to offering their version for free to get market share!</p> <p>What is wrong with this picture?</p> <p>Ironically, the difference is easy to see from my chair. As a marketer, I am always watching the marketplace horizons to see where the next advantage might be found.</p> <p>We consumers have a need for one thing only. We want value for our money ? real value.</p> <p>With Microsoft?s deep, deep pockets, they are able to sell us on the idea of the value of their products. Additionally, Microsoft can afford to put their software into pretty boxes and on the shelves of thousands of retailers, adding to their carefully crafted perception of value. Because Microsoft can afford to paint a solid picture of value to us, we do not hesitate to cough up the hundreds of dollars required to own Microsoft?s products.</p> <p>Now returning to the challenge of the little guy, we little guys do not have deep pockets to sell you on the value of </p> <p> our products. So, with Shareware and Trialware, we let you try our software for free for an amount of time, and then we hope and pray that the consumer will find value in the product and opt to pay for our products.</p> <p>Other companies have seen the skeletons of companies who have tried the Shareware and Trialware and have failed. Yet, the same person doing the hollering, if placed in a situation where he was told that he would need to go to work everyday without any expectation for a paycheck, would explode in fury!</p> <p>Would it be better that these dedicated software developers did not produce any software at all? Should software development be left only to Microsoft?</p> <p>I don?t know about your household, but in my household, if I don?t bring in the money, then I would be minus a wife and family! So, the challenge I am left with ? if I want to work in software development, I must find a way to get hired on at Microsoft, find millions in seed capital to create value for the retail market or to build advertising into my software. Me, I have tried the shareware route? and then cut my losses and moved on. It was a good product, really it was?</p> <p>I will tell you what. If I ever write any more software for the Windows operating system, I will likely create an Adware product. From the developers perspective, it is the safe bet. From the consumers perspective, it really should be considered a small price to pay to keep my wife happy and me working to improve the product.</p> <p>I am talking about this issue tonight because one of my favorite software packages has gone to the Adware model with its latest upgrade. In an Adventure with Scientists</em> is an absolute treat from start to finish: daft, funny, clever and visually stunning.</p> <p>The story begins in 1837 with the pirates, a hapless crew of buccaneers led by the equally hapless pirate captain. He is desperate to win the Pirate of the Year award but cannot seem to plunder a single doubloon.</p> <p>Their blundering eventually leads them to board The Beagle, where they meet a nerdy young naturalist by the name of Charles Darwin. As the captain laments that he has plundered yet another ship with no treasure (unless you count a baboon?s kidney), Darwin notices that the pirates have something even more precious in their possession: a pet ?parrot?, Polly, that is actually a dodo.</p> <span id="more"></span> <p>Thus begins a rollicking tale of greed, double-crossing and slapstick adventure that leads The Pirates! into the heart of Victorian London?s science circles and beyond, all the way to Blood Island and the award ceremony for Pirate of the Year.</p> <p><em>The Pirates!</em> is instantly recognisable as an Aardman movie - director Peter Lord also made <em>Chicken Run</em> and <em>Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit</em> - but by adding CGI and 3D to its trademark claymation technique the animators have upped the ante on their already astonishingly high standards.</p> <p>Science and scientists are central to the plot, and as with all things Aardman the attention to detail is painstaking. Darwin really looks like Darwin and the movie is full of subtle references to his life and works; when The Pirates! gatecrash the Royal Society (motto: ?Playing God Since 1660?), it is accurately set at Somerset House on the Strand in London, where the Society was based for most of the 19th century. Michael Faraday and other luminaries of Victorian science make recognisable cameo appearances.</p> <p>But you don?t need to know anything about science (except that dodos were extinct by 1837) to enjoy this movie. It?s brilliant - absolutely brilliant - family entertainment. My two sons, aged 9 and 11, have seen pretty much every animated movie ever made. They both thought this was the best yet.</p> <p>And there?s more where that came from. The movie is an adaptation of a 2004 novel by Gideon Defoe, the first of a series of four Pirates! adventures. A sequel is already in the works. So far it hasn?t stopped any work yet but heavy sea conditions have made what is normally a fairly effortless task into hard work, and one data logger located in a storm corner of reef was left because the sea was too rough for safety. Yesterday morning a short squall with over 40 knot winds made for an extremely uncomfortable period for the surface team who huddled in the wind and rain.</p> <p>When the divers surfaced at the end of the squall, all smiles and comments about how rich the coral was, they were surprised to see some miserable faces greet them. In the afternoon, a trip to the seaward side of Eagle Island had to be abandoned before we got there due to very high waves making it potentially dangerous. However, a reserve site in the lagoon proved to be very rich in the species that some of us were sampling.</p> <p>In Eagle Island, we also found an area which is undergoing an outbreak of Crown of Thorns starfish (COTs). There is a large area of dead Acropora coral, which are COTs favourite food. That which was dead for some weeks is covered in algae, while that which is recently dead is bleached pure white, and among these newly dead bleached patches we found aggregations of about 20 COTs per square metre. We took the opportunity to map the area affected and found that it fortunately goes only half way down Eagle Island rather than covering its entire coast.</p> <img class="size-full wp-image-2206" title="Sailfish Eagle (2)" src="http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/expeditions/files/2012/03/Sailfish-Eagle-2.jpg" alt="Sailfish Eagle - photo: Anne & Charles Sheppard/ Chagos Conservation Trust" width="448" height="336"/><p class="wp-caption-text">Sailfish Eagle - photo: Anne & Charles Sheppard/ Chagos Conservation Trust</p> <p>Expedition doctor Bob Long made a manta board and was towed along the length of Eagle Island; as a result the heavily impacted area has been mapped along with the approach front of the outbreak and the as yet unimpacted area. We have taken several GPS coordinates to plot the boundaries of the area so we can look to check on extent of damage and recovery sometime in the future. Usually these outbreaks are completely natural, and being a healthy reef system, we predict that the corals here will bounce back in a short time, given that there are no other stressors acting on the reefs here.</p> <p>One dive team caused a lot of envy amongst the rest of us by seeing a sailfish swim by. It was about 2 metres long and swam past only about 10 metres away from the divers. We will post the picture of it when we return to Diego Garcia.</p> <p>In the evenings we are continuing the Pacific Marlin Seminar Series (rated by some to be on a par with far grander lecture series!) which started with the expedition in 2006. After the evening briefing, each scientist gives a short presentation on their research. As we are a collection of scientists from all over the world and working on a variety of topics, we have a lot to learn from each other. It is trading at a P/E of 13, though offering a negligible yield of 0.27%.?</p> <p>This kind of valuation is near historical lows, making precious metals producers (as a group) a very compelling investment right now.</p> <p>That?s not to say they can?t get cheaper.</p> <p>But consider this: The very first time GDX traded at today?s prices was back in October 2007.</p> <p>At the time gold was trading under $800 and silver under $15.?</p> <p>Both metals are at?<em><span>double</span></em>?those levels right now. Yet the gold and silver producers are still trading at October 2007 prices.</p> <p>This can?t last.</p> <p>Investor sentiment toward gold is at exceptionally low levels versus the average of the past four years.</p> <p>But real interest rates (interest you can earn safely minus inflation) are near -3%. That has historically kept gold in a bull market.</p> <p>On a seasonal basis, we?re also likely at the ?trough,? where gold stocks tend to bottom out before heading higher.</p> <p>How much higher??</p> <p>Well, if we look at the data from the past decade since gold started its secular bull run, the HUI has?<em>averaged?</em>15% gains from mid-March until the end of May.</p> <p>And gold stocks are at an extreme ?undervalued? level right now: another great contrarian signal.</p> <p>The past several times we?ve had this kind of setup, gold stocks have absolutely soared, with the HUI Index shooting up over 100% in the ensuing twelve months.</p> <p>The current price range for GDX ? $45 to $50 ? has previously acted as both resistance and support.</p> <p>In my view, the inflection point is close at hand. Working with genetically engineered mice and the genomes of thousands of people with schizophrenia, researchers at Johns Hopkins say they now better understand how both nature and nurture can affect one's risks for schizophrenia and abnormal brain development in general.</p> <p>The researchers reported in the March 2 issue of <em>Cell</em> that defects in a schizophrenia-risk genes and environmental stress right after birth together can lead to abnormal brain development and raise the likelihood of developing schizophrenia by nearly one and half times.</p> <p>"Our study suggests that if people have a single genetic risk factor alone or a traumatic environment in very early childhood alone, they may not develop mental disorders like schizophrenia," says Guo-li Ming, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurology and member of the Institute for Cell Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "But the findings also suggest that someone who carries the genetic risk factor and experiences certain kinds of stress early in life may be more likely to develop the disease."</p> <p>Pinpointing the cause or causes of schizophrenia has been notoriously difficult, owing to the likely interplay of multiple genes and environmental triggers, Ming says. Searching for clues at the molecular level, the Johns Hopkins team focused on the interaction of two factors long implicated in the disease: Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) protein, which is important for brain development, and GABA, a brain chemical needed for normal brain function.</p> <p>To find how these factors impact brain development and disease susceptibility, the researchers first engineered mice to have reduced levels of DISC1 protein in one type of neuron in the hippocampus, a region of the brain involved in learning, memory and mood regulation. Through a microscope, they saw that newborn mouse brain cells with reduced levels of DISC1 protein had similar sized and shaped neurons as those from mice with normal levels of DISC1 protein. To change the function of the chemical messenger GABA, the researchers engineered the same neurons in mice to have more effective GABA. Those brain cells looked much different than normal neurons, with longer appendages or projections. Newborn mice engineered with both the more effective GABA and reduced levels of DISC1 showed the longest projections, suggesting, Ming said, that defects in both DISC1 and GABA together could change the physiology of developing neurons for the worse.</p> <p>Meanwhile, other researchers at University of Calgary and at the National Institute of Physiological Sciences in Japan had shown in newborn mice that changes in environment and routine stress can impede GABA from working properly during development. In the next set of experiments, the investigators paired reducing DISC1 levels and stress in mice to see if it could also lead to developmental defects. To stress the mice, the team separated newborns from their mothers for three hours a day for ten days, then examined neurons from the stressed newborns and saw no differences in their size, shape and organization compared with unstressed mice. But when they similarly stressed newborn mice with reduced DISC1 levels, the neurons they saw were larger, more disorganized and had more projections than the unstressed mouse neurons. The projections, in fact, went to the wrong places in the brain.</p> <p>Next, to see if their results in mice correlated to suspected human schizophrenia risk factors, the researchers compared the genetic sequences of 2,961 schizophrenia patients and healthy people from Scotland, Germany and the United States. Specifically, they determined if specific variations of DNA letters found in two genes, DISC1 and a gene for another protein, NKCC1, which controls the effect of GABA, were more likely to be found in schizophrenia patients than in healthy individuals. They paired 36 DNA "letter" changes in DISC1 and two DNA letter variations in NKCC1 -- one DNA letter change per gene -- in all possible combinations. Results showed that if a person's genome contained one specific combination of single DNA letter changes, then that person is 1.4 times more likely than people without these DNA changes to develop schizophrenia. Having these single DNA letter changes in either one of these genes alone did not increase risk.</p> <p>"Now that we have identified the precise genetic risks, we can rationally search for drugs that correct these defects," says Hongjun Song, Ph.D., co-author, professor of neurology and director of the Stem Cell Program at the Institute for Cell Engineering.</p> <p>Other authors of the paper from Johns Hopkins are Ju Young Kim, Cindy Y. Liu, Fengyu Zhang, Xin Duan, Zhexing Wen, Juan Song, Kimberly Christian and Daniel R. Weinberger. Emer Feighery, Bai Lu and Joseph H. Since then, volatile stocks and falling <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1332686044_0">bond yields</span> have forced them to take charges to guarantee future obligations, further hitting their share prices.</p> <p> A recent rise in bond yields - spurred by a market-friendly comments from the U.S. Federal Reserve this month and healthier U.S. economic data - has brought back investors eager to catch a recovering sector on the upswing.</p> <p> But analysts caution that while the rise in bond yields is definitely a positive for the companies, it's too early to say they're out of the woods.</p> <p> "If you buy a lifeco right now, you're making a leveraged bet that the 10-year and 30-year bond yields will tick up. That's all it is," said <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1332686044_7">Peter Routledge</span>, an analyst at <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1332686044_6">National Bank Financial</span>. "Nothing has changed over the last two weeks in terms of earnings outlook."</p> <p> MARKET-RELATED LOSSES</p> <p> In addition to Industrial Alliance, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1332686044_5">Manulife Financial</span> , <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1332686044_4">Sun Life Financial</span> and Great-West Lifeco have risen 11 percent, 12 percent and 4 percent, respectively, versus a flat performance of the benchmark S&P/TSX composite index <.GSPTSE>.</p> <p> Under Canadian accounting rules, life insurers must keep adjusting their projections of returns from the huge investment portfolios that back their policy obligations.</p> <p> Canadian <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1332686044_8">government bond yields</span> recently hit a 2012 high, with yield on the 30-year issue rising to 2.836 percent from a record low 2.413 percent in December.</p> <p> When lower stocks or bond yields reduce return projections, the insurers must take the difference out of their profits, which has led to steep quarterly losses during quarters when markets are weak.</p> <p> While the companies take losses when yields fall, a flat to slightly higher market does not mean easy sailing, analysts note.</p> <p> Indeed, if rates stay at their current level for the long term, the insurers would have to take more losses on longer-term obligations, meaning that rising yields are needed just to preserve the status quo.</p> <p> To get to the point of a meaningful improvement in earnings expectations, a more substantial and lasting move is needed.</p> <p> RBC Capital Markets analyst Andre-Philippe Hardy said interest rates need to rise 50 basis points and stock markets have to rise 8 percent in each of the next two years for the companies to meet return-on-equity estimates of 10 to 12 percent.</p> <p> "We would not chase this rally," he said in a note, adding that he does not expect the recent market moves to have a meaningful impact on first-quarter results.</p> <p> DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD</p> <p> The lack of positive profit impact from the market move is largely the result of the insurers' efforts over the past two years to waterproof their results against market volatility.</p> <p> Both Manulife and Sun Life have heavily hedged against both stock and bond movements and cut out products that exposed them to losses in weak markets.</p> <p> This has reduced negative earnings shocks over the last year, but also means there will be less of a positive impact as markets rebound from current levels.</p> <p> A lot of the profits that they were booking ... they didn't have the hedging costs built in," said David Beattie, an analyst at Moody's Investors Service.
